CA8: Apparent hidden compartment under trunk raised RS to PC

Defendant consented to a search of his car during a stop because of something dragging under the car. He was asked because he was nervous. In the trunk, the officer noticed the carpet was glued down, and that indicated to him that the carpet covered a hidden compartment. Under the car, it was apparent there was a compartment welded to the bottom. This, coupled with everything else, rose to probable cause. United States v. Zamora-Garcia, 2016 U.S. App. LEXIS 13986 (8th Cir. Aug. 2, 2016).

The officer had reasonable suspicion for a stop of defendant based on his recent alleged crimes and possession of a weapon. When stopped, defendant’s movements suggested he was armed. United States v. Chandler, 2016 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 100527 (E.D.N.Y. June 16, 2016).*
