SC: Opening the door of an occupied car is a search

Opening the door of an occupied car is a search. Here it was reasonable because it was based on officer safety. McHam v. State, 404 S.C. 465, 746 S.E.2d 41 (2013):

Although we are aware of contrary authority, we find the above reasoning to be persuasive and hold the opening of the door of an occupied vehicle is an intrusion, however slight, that generally constitutes a search for purposes of the Fourth Amendment. In such cases, a search results based on the fact that it enables the officer to observe portions of the interior of the vehicle that would not otherwise be readily visible to those who are outside the vehicle.

Occupied or not, it’s a search.
