The investigation into last weekend’s mass shooting in a Texas church may launch a new round in the decades-old fight between the FBI and Silicon Valley over law enforcement’s access to encrypted data. And this time, the government player leading the charge will be Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has spent months hinting that the Trump administration will take a harder line against the tech industry’s trend toward unbreakable encryption.

The assault on digital privacy does not depend on who is President or Attorney General. It’s rank and file professional prosecutors. They should just hire hackers.
