Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and another email providers have dodged 15 government search warrants seeking information related to accounts thought to be involved in an identity theft scheme, after an Alabama federal magistrate judge held that the requests threaten the users’ Fourth Amendment rights.

The requests sought essentially all data, including the contents of emails, related to the subject accounts with the tech giants and 1&1 Media Inc. without any limitations on how far back the federal government could search nor on what information it could hold.
