IA: Guilty plea by a person later proved innocent bars civil action for false arrest

“In this case, we consider whether a defendant who has pled guilty to a criminal offense but later successfully challenged the validity of the plea may qualify as a “wrongfully imprisoned person” under Iowa Code section 663A.1 (2015).” While the innocent sometimes plead guilty to avoid harsh consequences, the guilty plea is still a bar to a wrongful incarceration claim in this state. Rhoades v. State, 15–1169 (Iowa April 20, 2016).*
