NYLJ: Judge Grapples With Request for Apple to Decrypt iPhone by Andrew Keshner:

A federal magistrate judge had tough questions Monday for Apple Inc. and federal prosecutors on whether he should compel the technology giant to disable the security features of a passcode-protected iPhone obtained through a search warrant.

The Eastern District U.S. Attorney’s Office asked Magistrate Judge James Orenstein to issue an order under the All Writs Act directing Apple to override security features for a phone neither the FBI nor Drug Enforcement Agency can unlock.

Though the company has complied with previous data extraction demands from authorities, about 70 times since 2008 by the prosecution’s count, Apple contends it would be burdened by this request and could face reputational harm.
