As previewed here, the question on which the Court granted review in Heien v. North Carolina was a simple one: May a police officer’s reasonable mistake of law provide the ‘reasonable suspicion’ required for a traffic stop under the Fourth Amendment? The Justices’ questions appeared to indicate an almost unanimous affirmative answer, although the Chief Justice did note that an answer with too broad a scope might have “troubling” implications.
