SALT LAKE CITY — A Weber County lawmaker’s efforts to secure the privacy rights of Utahns from an unwarranted invasion of their electronic privacy is being hailed as historic in extending Fourth Amendment rights into the technological age.

Using some simple electronic tools, Rep. Ryan Wilcox, R-North Ogden, gave a demonstration Friday of how easy it is to gain access to a person’s location through electronic devices. He said that personal data, without a search warrant, represents a new intrusion into the home. His bill, HB 128, makes it illegal for a government entity to obtain location information, stored data or transmitted data of an electronic device without a search warrant.
