{"id":2062,"date":"2008-05-09T06:43:21","date_gmt":"2008-05-08T16:54:31","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2008-05-08T16:54:31","slug":"en-US","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fourthamendment.com\/?p=2062","title":{"rendered":"NYPD&#8217;s stop-and-frisk policy subject to suit as racially biased"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Columbia University master&#8217;s graduate and free lance reporter for the NY Post, through the NYCLU, has sued the NYPD claiming its stop-and-frisk practice promotes stops and frisks for &#8220;walking while black&#8221;. <a href=\"http:\/\/ap.google.com\/article\/ALeqM5iTs5fkyRJW_bksd5XXBwNu-ouNeAD90H2KH80\">Group&#8217;s lawsuit challenges NYPD&#8217;s stop-and-frisk policy<\/a>, from AP:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A civil liberties group sued Wednesday in a challenge to the NYPD&#8217;s practice of stopping hundreds of thousands of people each year for questioning, saying it is racially biased.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Civil Liberties Union lawsuit lists New York Post reporter Leonardo Blair as the sole plaintiff, saying he was stopped and frisked by police officers as he walked from his car to his Bronx home last November.<\/p>\n<p>He was taken to a police station, where officers expressed surprise that though he was black, he was not from &#8220;the projects,&#8221; the lawsuit said. Blair, 28, has a master&#8217;s degree from Columbia University.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, said the NYPD has stopped people in New York nearly a million times over the past two years under the practice.
