James Madison and his colleagues wrote this view into the U.S. Constitution via the Fourth Amendment, which famously protects &#8220;the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fall, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case that involves the modern application of that adage and its venerable constitutional corollary.
