A bill passed by the state legislature would require law-enforcement officers to obtain a warrant before searching the cell phone of a person placed under arrest.<\/p>\n<p>If signed by the governor, the bill would override a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2011\/TECH\/mobile\/01\/05\/search.warrant.phone.gahran\/\">January ruling<\/a> by the California Supreme Court. According to California Sen. Mark Leno, who sponsored the legislation, this ruling had &#8220;legalized the warrantless search of cell phones during an arrest, regardless of whether the information on the phone is relevant to the arrest or if criminal charges are ever filed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/info.sen.ca.gov\/pub\/11-12\/bill\/sen\/sb_0901-0950\/sb_914_bill_20110902_enrolled.html\">new California law<\/a> unanimously passed in the state Assembly. Gov.
