In January 2010, two Ohio men were suspected of responsibility for a string of armed burglaries. Sheriff’s deputies placed a GPS tracking device on a car registered to one of the men, and then monitored the location of the vehicle. On the ninth day of monitoring, a home owner reported that two armed men had just broken into his home and shot his dog. The deputies checked the GPS tracking and observed that the suspect’s car was in the vicinity of this home invasion, and were able to track the movements of the car back to one of the suspects’ homes. The men were arrested and later convicted of the armed burglary. An appeal, alleging that the use of the GPS device violated the Fourth Amendment, is pending.<\/p>\n

GPS devices are attractive to law enforcement personnel because they are small, can easily be attached to vehicles, and have a long battery life. They can cheaply and efficiently track the precise locations of numerous people in real-time via the internet. But the constitutionality of the use of these devices is one of the most debated and litigated issues facing law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judges.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
