But the courts have carved out a variety of exceptions to that general rule, including one known as the \u201cautomobile exception\u201d: It allows police to search a vehicle without a warrant if the vehicle is \u201creadily mobile\u201d and they have probable cause to believe that it contains evidence of a crime.
