{"id":2845,"date":"2009-01-07T07:05:27","date_gmt":"2009-01-06T13:16:30","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-01-06T13:16:30","slug":"en-US","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/fourthamendment.com\/?p=2845","title":{"rendered":"NYC TLC to requre recording of passengers in taxicabs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NYC Taxicab and Limousine Commission is seriously considering video recording passengers in NYC Taxicabs, according to a posting yesterday afternoon on the City Blog on NYTimes: <a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/01\/05\/a-black-box-for-taxicabs\/\">A \u2018Black Box\u2019 for Taxicabs?<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You may be recorded.\u201d Soon, a select group of New York City yellow taxicabs will be marked with decals bearing that message. <\/p>\n<p>As part of a data-collection experiment, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission will install windshield-mounted cameras, similar to the \u201cblack boxes\u201d in aircraft, that will record data on vehicle use, road accidents and other information in and around the city\u2019s yellow taxicabs. <\/p>\n<p>The information about the cameras has been making the rounds of the Internet, including a Web site known as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yellowcabnyc.com\/nyc-taxi\/pilot-data-collection-devices\">YellowCabNYC<\/a>. The Daily News, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/ny_local\/2009\/01\/05\/2009-01-05_taxi_and_limousine_commissioner_wants_ca.html\">which reported on the pilot project<\/a>, described the initiative as a form of surveillance, but officials at the Taxi and Limousine Commission disputed that term.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/tlc\/downloads\/pdf\/presentation_macbox_revised.pdf\">seven-page presentation<\/a> [pdf] [dated 12\/18\/08] released by the commission said the windshield-mounted cameras, under the model name MacBox III, were proposed by a manufacturer, Drivequest Technologies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Las Vegas has required this for years. You can see them in the cabs.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the comments says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOf course you can continue to have sex in NYC cabs. It will just be recorded.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014 coco<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2007, the S.D.
