Of course not. But\u2026\u2026. terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>We cannot bear the thought of another large terror attack here. Rightly or wrongly, that\u2019s the fact. It\u2019s about as close to a universal consensus as you get in this country. And it\u2019s also pretty evident that we consider the massive surveillance going on as having some utility in preventing such an attack. Tracking and uncovering plots before they are carried out is the goal, and spying on everyone is the means. Has there been misuse of this data? Maybe, maybe not, but they HAVE it. That\u2019s the bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>You can grumble at Obama about this, or George Bush, or both. But they are doing what the vast majority wants them to do.
